Virtual Reading Room of the Russian State Library

VRR RSL at the Russian Centre of Mongolian University of Science and Technology ( 29 June 2013, Ulaanbaatar)

29 June 2013, in Ulaanbaatar there took place the ceremony of opening a Virtual Reading Room of the Russian State Library. The event was held at the Russian Centre of the library of Mongolian University of Science and Technology within the framework of the 8th International Forum in Strategic Technologies (IFOST 2013).

Among the participants of the IFOST 2013 there were the officials of the Russian State Library, Nina V. Avdeeva, head of the Administrative department of management and monitoring service for clients (UFKS), and Tatyana A. Blinova, vice head of the Department of support of access to electronic resources of the RSL (OPD).

The ceremony of launching the VRR RSL was given a start by professor Batbayar Tudev, rector of the university. In his greeting speech mister rector thanked heartily the Russian State Library for the chance to access the modern knowledge treasures, which had to contribute to strengthening the cooperation of the two nations. Mr Batbayar Tudev showed a particular appreciation of his to professor Gurbazar Lkhamsuren, the authorized official of Mongolia in Russia, for his assistance in preparing the event. The speaker pointed out at Mr Lkhamsuren' s overall contribution to the international cooperation of Mongolia and Russia in such spheres as science, culture and creative activities.

From the Russian State Library, the participants of the ceremony were greeted by Nina V. Avdeeva, head of UFKS RSL. She handed the "VRR RSL" plaque to the rector. Since that moment there was considered to be organized access to the RSL Digital Library of Dissertations on the premises of the Russian Centre of the library of Mongolian University of Science and Technology.

Mr Batbayar T., Ms Nina Avdeeva and Mr Gurbazar L. cut the red ribbon, after which professor Tuul Chihmed, the VRR administrator opened the doors of the Russian Centre for all the guests of the ceremony, as well as for any of the citizens of Mongolia willing to enter ever since .

Further on Ms Nina Avdeeva presented her speech "The Russian State Library and its E-Resources". She reported on the library collections and principles of organization of library materials. The speaker also introduced the new service provided by the RSL "Testing texts for plagiarism". After that she described the work of the RSL Internet Store of Services and encouraged the audience to make orders if they wished. Her speech being over, Ms Avdeeva answered all the questions and gave an interview to the representatives of the Mongolian mass media on the spot.

In conclusion, the officials of the RSL presented to the university library a gift edition on the history of the Russian State Library beginning with the 19th century to date.

From the Mongolian officials, the RSL was given a gift edition on the history of Ulaanbaatar, which would likely to take its place of honour in the RSL collections.

A decision to launch a Virtual Reading Room of the Russian State Library on the premises of the Russian Centre of the library of Mongolian University of Science and Technology had been taken by the university administration board in order to popularize Russian as well as to encourage the young to learn it. The opening ceremony gathered approximately 40 people who were the participants of the IFOST 2013 from Russia, China and Mongolia, alongside with the teachers and lecturers of the university.

Counting its history from the year of 1959, Mongolian University of Science and Technology (formerly known as the Institute of Polytechnic) is one of the five leading universities of the nation. From the very beginning it opened its doors for the students of several departments, such as the department of architecture, the department of energy, the department of geology and the department of engineering. In 1990, by the governmental decision, the Institute of Polytechnic was given its present name. Nowadays it can boast of 15 departments and over 24, 000 students.

The library of the university plays one of the important roles in the educational process on the national level. It is located in a separate 6-floor building within the territory of the university. At present the head of the library is professor Gulnar Chakerkhaan. The library gains new acquisitions to its collections by way of subscription, through interlibrary loans or commercial arrangements. Still there are other sources of acquisitions that including donations and financial support.
